Internet Vets For Truth
Derek’s been writing his weblog for four years now, over 230,000 words. I think I’ve read it consistently for most of that time. I’ve learned things, renewed friendships and hired him. Does it take up a lot of time, I think he must get the balance just right:
“Not overwhelming, but also not […]
The Citizens’ Assembly Rocks
“Every now and then, something happens in politics that confounds the cynics and negates the naysayers: one of those rare, inspiring moments when democracy bursts out of the pens the political class have built around it, when the people’s voice is actually heard — when the system, in short, works.”
So everyone around me is probably sick of my obsession with the U.S. presidential race. I’ve followed U.S. politics since long before studying it in University. We’ve watched the ads, the debates, and debated the issues. I’ve followed the ups and downs of the Electoral College vote (via the excellent site electoral-vote.com. […]
Maybe I can get a cat afterall.
“ALLERCA is working to produce the world’s first hypoallergenic cats. These cats will allow some of the millions of people allergic to cats to enjoy the love and companionship of a household pet without suffering from allergy symptoms.”
Design Process
“Jumping into any design project before examining the problem or task at hand might spin the wheels, but won’t get you very far. Any project, no matter how big or small, can benefit from research and planning before the work begins. Design is no exception. If discovery begins before the exploration commences, the probability […]
Regret The Error
“Regret The Error reports on corrections, retractions, clarifications, and trends regarding accuracy and honesty in North American media.”
I tried, I really did try. I’m concerned that all the blogs and news sites I read come from a large list of blogs and news sites my friends and colleagues read. As the election heated up and I traveled more I thought I should try and expand the type of site I […]
On Saturday Vancouverites rejected moving the city’s electoral system to a ward based system. Good.
I could write a big long article as to why…but basically I didn’t want to turn our city into even more fractured constituencies. Let’s think about one big picture.
Globe & Mail story here.
“Toronto, Montreal and every other major city […]
Some interesting background history on one of my favourite films, Dr. Strangelove.
“What few people knew, at the time and since, was just how accurate this film was. Its premise, plotline, some of the dialogue, even its wildest characters eerily resembled the policies, debates and military leaders of the day…
…But until then, could some loony general […]
It’s Thanksgiving Day today in Canada. There’s a few reasons I think it’s on a different day than the States.
Anyways I’m not home this year to enjoy it… so to all my family and friends who help and support me every day - Thanks. I’ve got lots to be thankful for.
A campaign really needs to be waged to stop bad American movies from being played in Europe on network television. So much crap, so much misunderstanding. Wrong, wrong, wrong. (I write this as I desperately look for something to watch on the hotel TV)
…On a brighter note I saw Layer Cake this […]
While we’re on the topic of the U.S. election, I’ve been checking this site which tracks polls in the U.S. and projects how they translate into the electoral college breakdown. Very cool site. By the way, pro-Kerry fans may want to check out the statistical projection forward to election day. Ouch.
I had written a big long post about Bush and Iraq. I deleted it. Instead let me just say I was wrong about Bush. On Iraq, I was wrong to think that Bush and his team could pull this whole thing off. I’m glad Saddam is gone (and we should try […]
Given that I’ve dropped it once already this trip, a reminder for later: How To Back Up Your Mac.

I’m stuck with about five working channels in my London hotel room (and there is nothing but news, bad English reality TV and terrible American movies). I like TV and like to watch a few favourite shows, and just generally like the background noise. It annoys me that I still can’t easily […]
Hello from London. Tired when I get home from work so quiet on the posting front. Lots going on of course but will try and write/post more later. Meantime hints for Christmas. (Not for me, but for me to buy).
From Tim Bray (Oh Sarah) this morning, a link to this remarkable use of the internet/web/iTunes [needs iTunes to work] by Sarah McLaughlin. Brightens up a rainy London day (and a long one in the office) and gets my mind thinking of what to do with all that we know about our medium.
